Installing a Closed Loop and Energy efficient Waste Processing Facility in the Electronic City Industrial Township Authority
“The governing body of Electronics City needed an alternative, more sustainable means of water treatment in addition to the already existing infrastructure and facilities for Waste (Solid and Water) Management”
With a growing population in Electronic city, the need for natural resources rises too. This in turn means that more waste will be generated and this waste needs to be treated effectively.

ELCITA is divided into multiple zones based on scale and type of industry. Firefly Life Sciences together with their partners consulted for the Bhavani Industrial Systems division in the East phase of ELCITA and proposed sustainable alternatives.
The ELCITA corporation believes in sustainable solutions and is working on building a smart city. The reuse of wastewater post treatment is a priority for them considering the preciousness of water and the growing population. Unfortunately, the area assigned for wastewater and solid waste treatment was only 1 acre. This land alone had to cater to a large chunk of the municipality’s waste.
“Firefly’s approach was to design a vertical treatment plant considering the allocated space for the treatment.”
The issue with the conventional way
Building conventional treatment plants requires a lot of skilled labour, and it is energy intensive making it an impractical solution for ELCITA. These systems take up large areas and that is not feasible in Electronic City. The high energy consumption would be expensive in the long run. As these systems require regular maintenance, it comes at an additional overall cost.
Firefly’s Alternative Approach
Our proposed concept design was to implement a constructed wetland that ran vertically along the waste management building’s facade. The building itself would have Solid Waste Processing and Bio-methanation Systems on individual floors, along with Laboratories, Meeting Rooms and an Educational Center that explained the workings of the holistic waste processing Facility. The temperature and air quality of the building and its surroundings would greatly be impacted in a positive way. Specific air and water purifying plants would be grown around the building making it an aesthetically pleasing landmark.
Firefly’s solution was to polish treated water through a Vertical Constructed Wetland Treatment System to optimize the allocated space for the Waste Treatment facility.
